Why we have comments

The comment section is here for readers planning a trip, moving to Barbados, or raising a family here — to ask questions, share what worked, and correct us when we've got something wrong. Some of the most useful information on this blog has come from readers rather than from us.

It's a small, moderated space, not a forum. We'd rather have twenty useful comments than two hundred noisy ones.

What's welcome

  • Questions about anything in a post — we answer as many as we can

  • Your own experience of a hotel, beach, restaurant or route, including where it differs from ours

  • Corrections. Prices change, restaurants close, roads move. Tell us and we'll update the post

  • Recommendations for other readers, including places we haven't covered

  • Disagreement, said plainly and without personal attack

What gets removed

We remove comments that are:

  • Abusive — insults, harassment, threats, or pile-ons aimed at another reader, a business, or us

  • Discriminatory — anything attacking people on the basis of race, nationality, religion, gender, sexuality, disability or class. This includes the coded version

  • Spam — link-dropping, keyword-stuffed names, SEO backlink attempts, repetitive promotional posts

  • Commercial without disclosure — if you have a stake in a business you're recommending, say so. Anonymous promotion of your own hotel or tour is removed

  • Fake — invented reviews, comments posing as someone else, or coordinated posting

  • Revealing someone's private information — addresses, phone numbers, workplaces or photographs of people who haven't agreed to it

  • Defamatory or unlawful — unproven accusations against a named business or person, or anything that breaks Barbadian law

  • Off-topic — including political argument unrelated to the post

We don't remove a comment simply because it's critical of us, of a place we recommended, or of Barbados.

Links and self-promotion

One relevant link in a comment is fine if it genuinely helps the person who asked. Links posted to build search ranking are removed, and a link appearing in a comment is not a recommendation from us. If you run a business our readers would find useful, you're welcome to say so in a comment where it's relevant — or email us rather than posting repeatedly across several posts.

Children and privacy

Please don't post children's full names, schools, daily routines or identifying photographs in the comments — your own children or anyone else's. We remove that information when we see it, without waiting to be asked, and we apply the same rule to our own family in our own writing.

Comments are public and indexed by search engines. Don't post anything about yourself or your family that you wouldn't want a stranger to find in five years' time.

How moderation works

  • Every comment is held for approval before it appears, so there's a delay between posting and seeing it on the page. Nothing has gone wrong if yours isn't there yet.

  • Readers can reply to each other and flag a comment for our attention. Flagging isn't a vote — we read the comment and decide.

  • We moderate as one person running a blog, usually within a few days — not instantly, and not overnight.

  • We may remove a comment, edit it to strip a link or personal information, or turn comments off on a post entirely.

  • Repeated breaches lead to a block.

  • We don't publish a list of removals or debate individual decisions publicly. If you think we've got one wrong, email us.

Publishing a comment isn't an endorsement of it. Comments are the views of the people who wrote them.

What you're agreeing to when you comment

  • You don't need an account to comment. You give a name and an email address, and that's it.

  • The comment is your own words, or you have the right to post them.

  • You give us permission to publish, keep, edit for length or clarity, and eventually delete your comment on this blog.

  • You're responsible for what you post, including anything you say about a named business.

  • We publish the name or display name you give us, along with your comment. Your email address is used for moderation and is not published by us — so please don't type it into the comment box itself.

Advice and accuracy

Readers sometimes offer medical, legal, immigration or financial advice in the comments. We don't check it and we can't stand behind it. Treat comments as one person's experience, not professional advice, and verify anything that matters with the relevant authority or professional.

Your information and your right to remove a comment

What we collect when you comment, and how long we keep it, is set out in the Privacy Policy. In short: the name and email you give us and the text of your comment, kept for as long as the post is published.

You can ask us to delete your comment at any time. Email skiptomalouuu@gmail.com with the link to the post and roughly what the comment said, and we'll remove it.

Questions about a moderation decision, a correction to a post, or a collaboration enquiry are all better by email than in the thread.
