Skip to Malou Caribbean Lifestyle and Travel Blog

Hi! I'm Malou [Pronounced Mah - Loo], the voice and photographer behind Skip to Malou travel blog. I’m a thirty-something half Bajan/half Dutch communications consultant living in Barbados.

My goal is to provide you with useful travel related resources with a focus on sustainability, whilst also sharing authentic Caribbean travel inspiration.

On this blog, you’ll find a mix of stories and posts about Caribbean culture and lifestyle, sustainable travel, community projects and other stuff sprinkled in between.

I’ve been blogging on Skip to Malou since 2010; My blog continues to evolve with me, and it’s changed a lot since I first started!

I was born and raised in Barbados, and I followed by heart back to the island after studying and working abroad for a number of years in the UK, China and The Netherlands.

In 2010, while traveling throughout South East Asia and the Middle East, I started updating family and close friends on my Tumblr blog (RIP), using a good ol' Blackberry. I’ve since travelled to 60+ countries but Barbados will always be home!

Part of why I blog is to share authentic, funny, insightful or helpful stories, and to add my voice and my perspective to issues I feel passionate about.

About Skip to Malou

Why focus on Sustainable Travel?

My family, in one way or another, has always been involved in the tourism sector; my British grandfather was a hotelier and Minister of Tourism in Barbados, my Dutch mother was a flight attendant, and my Dad and uncle used to manage hotels and restaurants. To say that travel and tourism is in my blood is an understatement.

However, I truly believe that the traditional models of tourism are not sustainable, and there is great potential in reshaping our tourism models to have a greater, positive impact on our communities. As a local living in a Small Island Developing State, we see the impacts of Climate Change and unsustainable tourism practices firsthand. I hope that my blog offers local insight and perspective to those who visit the Caribbean.
